The Body and Soul of being separate entities:
The distinction between body and soul doesn't exist. Here is why i believe that this is so.
The 'soul' as defined in humans is a complex computer program. The processor and author of which is the human mind. It can continuously write and rewrite its own code, such that no one particle of of brain matter (neural link if it is wanted to be kept scientific) is identical to its older version. Hoever, 'how' we write and rewrite our own 'code' differs from person to person based upon experience with the outside or external world.
This 'code' is what makes up our personality. How somethings may be funny to one person and other things are not so funny to the same person.
There can be no 'afterlife' or continuation of the soul because our body will no longer be able to 'maintain' our 'soul' or code. And this code is what our personality consists of. The soul ay not exist in any other form apart from our body for that exact reason. There will be no hardware to maintain the 'wetware.'
How then may the soul maintian its person, if the body - hardware - is always changing? Does this mean that the soul is always in a state of flux as well?
Technically, in strict order of asking: by rewriting itself; yes.
Yes, the soul is always in a constant state of flux. Butler set as an example, that it would be shortchanging ourselves to think that we are completely different people from one day to the next. However, strictly speaking that is exactly what is occuring, biochemically.
As we obtain a wider range of stimulus and input, we are destined to change the way we think about things. Our mental schema (mnemons) are continually rearranging themselves to make up for the differences in the enviorn and the surplus stimuli. We take in these brain foods and attempt to process them. What we can process, we do so... at an optimum rate. What we cannot process, we file under miscellaneous. Most times we never think about these things again (see my paper on the Mnemoic Structure of human thought.)
This, invariably, creates a change in the Self. The way we think is restructured. Mental links of organic compounds are reordered and relinked to accomodate for the new data. The case will arise when the same exact chemicals are disposed of and used for other processes in the brain. However, despite the physical change in the brain. We are not different beings; or beings of a different Self.
Hence, what interests us today, may not necessarily interest us in the future. In this way we may be different, but in reality, when one speaks to us, they will notice no discernible difference in our personality other than a change in 'tune' about a particular topic.
Since our personality is located deeper within our mnemonic structure such a change would mean a drastic reorganisation of our mnemons. Such a drastic reorganisation may only come from such events as a trauma (ie: physical or mental.)
Evolution has fostered the development of our schema by allowing the reorg'ing of itself. The hardware (body) has become good at changing, appending, and reworking our schema to increase the survivalibily of our bodys. It does so by instructing our bodies to rewrite the code in their brains, to compensate.
It is from this that we may conclude that the soul is a complex set of instrutions to allow humans to survive. The body rewrites the program to best suit its 'survivablity' skills. The only natural defence that the human has with which to survive.
A quick look at other 'lesser' species quickly demonstrates that each has its own 'survivability' asset. Since ours is our brain, it is no wonder that i am writing this at all, even more, that your are reading this article.
